Jamaican Saltfish Fritters/Flittas recipe, Stamp and Go, or Crispy Fry Fish Cakes. Sounds delicious already! Trust me if you haven’t had them before you are in for a delicious treat. These bite-size seafood seasoned dough mixture that’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and did I mention full of flavor yet filling are perfect for weekend breakfast for the entire family or quick and easy appetizers if you are hosting.

I know I said it’s ideal for breakfast and appetizers but you can also have it for lunch and dinner paired with your favorite seafood dip etc. As much as I would love to take credit for this quick and easy gem of a recipe it is a traditional Jamaican recipe that was passed down to me by my grandmother. Although I might tweak it just a little there’s no wrong or right way with this recipe once you add the main ingredient; “Saltfish” The other seasons are base on you.

What are Jamaican Jamaican Saltfish Fritters/Flittas made of?

Jamaican Saltfish fritters/Flittas are made from Saltfish or cod (main ingredients) onion, flour, green onion, thyme, bell peppers, powder season, water, and baking powder (optional),

What is Saltfish made of?

Saltfish also known as cod fish is a type of preserved fish that’s cured with salt. Yes is it a dry fish?

Can I substitute ingredients?

Sure you can use fresh cod fish if salted cod fish isn’t available. But remember to cook and flake the cod.

Do you need eggs?

No egg is needed for this recipe.

Do I cook the Saltfish?

Yes, you have to rinse salt fish to remove excess salt and boil it on medium heat for 15-20. Although cooking it is optional you can soak to remove excess however this process is longer.

Fun fact: This isn’t just a Jamaican recipe is a Caribbean dish however it’s called by different name on other island

 

What ingredients you will need?

Saltfish – Cooked unsalted cod

All-purpose flour – Any brand you have currently can be use
Green onion – Dice green onion works
Thyme – Fresh you dry works
Oil – Vegetable or coconut oil for frying
Bell peppers – I use green, yellow, and red optional vegetables but grate for color
Onion – Chopped yellow onions
Scotch Bonnet Pepper – For additional spice optional if you don’t like extra spice
Water – To make the batter and boil the Saltfish
Baking powder – optional I like to use just a tad bit
Powder Seasoning – For additional flavor I use, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, complete season, black pepper, and white pepper. It’s ok to omit some of this season.

How to make Jamaican Saltfish Fritters/Flittas?
Step 1

Wash the excess salt of the Saltfish. Place the washed fish in a pot with water on medium heat and boil for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2 

Remove Saltfish from heat and pour away boiling water. Add boiled Saltfish in cold water to cool it down.

Step 3

Remove skin, deboned Saltfish and flake into small flakes.

Step 4 

In a large mixing bowl, add flour baking powder, powder seasoning, and all other ingredients including salt and fish and mix to combine

Step 5 

Slowly add water to mix all ingredients until you get a sloppy dough paste

Step 6

Heat oil for frying on medium to low flames

Step 7

Use a spoon or quart measuring cup to add batter to hot oil. Fry fritter on both sides until golden brown. Place fried fritters on a lined plate to remove excess oil.

Step 8

Serve warm and enjoy!

Jamaican Saltfish Fritters

Cook time: 15 minutes
Serving: 6-8
Prep time: 45 minutes

Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 Cup sweet dice onion
  • 2 Chopped Green onion
  • 1/4 Cup dice bell green peppers
  • 1/4 Cup dice yellow bell pepper
  • 1/4 Cup red bell pepper
  • 1 Slice Scotch bonnet pepper
  • 5 Sprig thyme leaves
  • 2 Cup Cooked Saltfish
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 Teaspoon Black pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking powder optional
  • 2 Cups Water
  • Salt to taste optional
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Complete season
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon White pepper
Instruction

•Wash the excess salt off the fish. Place the washed fish in a pot cover it with water and put to cook for 10 to 15 minutes.
• Remove salt fish from heat. Pour away boiling water. Wash the Saltfish in cold water to cool it.
• Remove the skin, debone the fish then break it into small fish flakes.
• In a mixing bowl, add the flour, Saltfish flakes, and all the other ingredients.
• Slowly add the water and mix all the ingredients until you get a sloppy paste.
• Heat oil in a frying pan on medium to low
• Fry fritters on both sides until golden brown
• Place fried fritters on a lined plate to absorb the excess oil.
• Serve and enjoy! Best when serve warm.
